There’s something novel about having dicks in a video game. There’s been a long history of artistic nudes but with a main focus on women and their breasts. I’m not the only one who’s noticed this, right? Even though women’s nipples are considered taboo and inappropriate in American culture – to the point of people being uncomfortable with women feeding their children – it’s alright to depict women naked from the chest up in the name of being edgy and artistic. Some games have started to show women’s nipples, like Dragon Age: Inquisition’s sex scenes for the romance options, but also notable in Dragon Age: Inquisition was the nearly comical use of a black box to censor the Iron Bull’s dick, as PC users with a certain mod were able to move the camera during cut scenes found out.
Obviously, the creators of Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey would be in something of a pickle. The Greeks weren’t too shy about the human body, and the game wasn’t taking place after someone took a chisel to all the dicks on statues, replacing them with leaves. Censoring the statues in the game would look weird – what would you do, blur them out? Blame it on the Animus somehow? There’s only so much suspension of disbelief a player can muster around this stuff.
Listen, I really don’t have an interest in looking at dicks, but the fact it’s there in the game is something that is both hilarious and impressive to me to the point I go out of my way to look for statues with dicks.
Side note: I think I’ve found maybe one statue that shows off a woman’s breasts, but it doesn’t seem to be related to any particular god, as the statues with dicks have. So far, I’ve found one for Zeus, two for Poseidon, and one for Apollo. I’ve yet to find any statues depicting the Greek goddesses in any form, but the day is young and I need more hours in the day to do everything and play this game.
Additional side note: Kassandra is absolutely wonderful and I love dressing her up in cute armor.
